Chapter One

You wiped a few beads of sweat from your forehead using the back of your arm, and continued scrubbing the outside of the house you lived in. THE OUTSIDE. You honestly didn't understand the point of this, and you swore that it was just your step mother being a bitch again.
Or…she was being a bitch STILL.

Eight years ago, your mother had passed away, and for a while it had just been you and your father, and your younger brother. But as the years passed, your tiny family grew short on money; your brother went away to work, and every month he would send you his paycheck…but it still wasn't enough.
Your father had been desperate when he married your step-mother. But it was the only reason he married her, he promised you; it was because she was rich.

Later on, your Dad had gone off to work as well –the same place as your sibling-, so now you were all alone.

"_____!!!" The annoyed, nasally scream sounded from inside the building, and you quickly rushed to its aid.
"Yes Ma'am?" You answered, out of breath slightly. The wrinkly, older woman thrust her nose into the air, and scowled down at you. You did your best not to grimace.
"I assume the outside of the house is done, correct, girl?" She asked in a mocking tone, and you looked at the floor. "Yes'm." You replied, even though it was a lie. She nodded, though it wasn't an approving nod.

"Very well. You need to go into town to pick up a jug of milk. Tidy yourself before you leave, too. I'll have no association with a girl an grungy as yourself." She sniffed, turned, and walked away with her head held high, leaving your to stand there a moment to compose yourself and keep your tears at bay.
You missed your family. You wrote all the time, but never got a letter back; you were debating on whether or not to just stop altogether….if they didn't send back, then they mustn't have cared, really…

You shook unhappy thoughts from your head, and ran upstairs to clean yourself. You weren't going to spoil the precious hour you got to yourself; the single hour twice a week that you didn't consider a chore-filled monster.

"I'm off!" You called, your pocket filled with a few coins that jingled as you walked towards the city.

-

There was a bounce in your step as you strolled into the town of Mickleton. Sure, it wasn't big like the cities surrounding it, but it was a lovely cobblestone-road community, and being in it made you happy.

"Hey! _____!"  A sweet  voice greeted your ears, and you turned around right in time to be enveloped in a hug by one of your friends, Feliciano. You hugged him back, and he pulled away, running around you a few times.
"Ve~ _____, I haven't seen you in so long! Where have you been?" He questioned, grabbing your hand and pulling you further into the town.

"Well…I've been working Feli…you know that. I'm really busy, and it's difficult to get out and about with the Dragon-Lady breathing down my neck." You both giggled at the name you gave your stepmother. Suddenly, your auburn-headed buddy looked to his left, and a large smile cracked out on his face.
"Ve~ I'll be right back!" he told you, and ran off into the crowd of people. Dang it….'right back' for Feli meant anywhere between thirty seconds and four hours….you wanted to stay, but you could risk the 'right back' being the long option.
"I'm sorry Feli…" You whispered, and skipped in the direction of the Local Dairy Shop.

-

"I'll have four quarts of half-fat milk, please!" you told the man at the counter, smiling the whole time. He returned the friendly gesture, and pulled out a large glass jug of the creamy substance.
"Ten dollars." He told you, and you pulled out the coins from your pocket.
Eight…Nine….Te-wait.

You recounted three or four times, but there was no mistake; you were short a dollar.

"Crap…" You grumbled anxiously. If you didn't get four quarts to milk to your stepmother and stepsisters, they would be livid.
"I-is there any way that you could let it slide today…please…." You begged the Milkman, and he sighed, shaking his head. He looked at you sadly. "I'm sorry, Miss, but if I let it go for you, then what will I have to do for everyone else? I like my business to remain fair…."
You nodded in understanding and turned to walk out.

Once you were on the street, you sat down on the curb and pulled out a small casket that you kept with you, just in case you ever needed it…for anything. Then, reluctantly, you started to sing a song about a poor girl who met a prince at a ball and married him.

By the end of the song you'd made six dollars, and you looked happily at the money. "Thank you." You said to the people who stood around you, and they applauded you.
As you trod back into the store, you took one last glance behind you, just in time to lock gazes with a set of bright blue eyes. You blushed and turned away.

--Alfred's POV—

He could have stayed lost in those pretty (e/c) eyes forever, had she not turned away. That girl was the same girl from the Milk Shop…or whatever it was called. The lady who had been short a dollar.
A dollar I would have gladly given her…had I been able to. Alfred thought to himself. Of course he had the money, he was damn stinking rich…royals usually were…but he was in town disguised as an everyday street-dweller…and the average-to-poor population couldn't afford to give away money; doing something reckless like that would call unwanted attention to him.
Especially from squealing girls whom adored him.

Alfred slipped silently away through an alley and started making his way back to the Grade Mansion he lived in with his brother and father.

--Reader's POV—

You arrived home, and were thankful that everyone was out. You wouldn't get yelled at that way…and you'd have a little peace and quiet; you might even be able to sneak a few pieces of cake from the cellar…cake….something you were never given any more.

You checked the mailbox on the way in, and pulled a letter out….
"I wonder who from…" You said aloud, as the address on the front simply said '__(last name)__ family'…and that still applied to you. You flipped the piece of paper over, and your eyes widened at the seal. The Royal Seal!
You hastily tore at the bonds holding it closed, and paused. You ripped it gentler…if there was something important inside, something you KNEW your stepmother would take away from you, you needed to be able to hide it and reclose the envelope.

After a bit of a battle with the wax on the back, you finally got the paper open. You read the note inside.

'__(last name)__ Family,
You have been formally invited to The Ball of Countries. Each year, tens of thousands of people gather from across the globe gather in the hosting home, and the city around it. This time around, we are celebrating an even more important event; we –the Royals, and the people of Mickleton- mark the day that our youngest heir, Alfred F. Jones, finds his bride.
Invitations are sent to every eligible woman around.
One guest is allowed to accompany each person.
'

Invitations? You tipped the envelope up and shook it curiously.
Out popped three slices of formal stationary….three…your stepmother wasn't a bachelorette, so that meant….

You squealed quietly and stuffed an invite to the inner folds of your dress, where no one would find it. You wouldn't be allowed to go, that was for sure….but you were going anyways.

You re-sealed the letter, making sure its contents were intact, and set it on the table in the front hallway.
You'd be like the girl in the song; you'd be the poor girl who would marry the sweet, handsome prince, and you'd live happily ever after…or at the very least, you'd have a night of fun, then you'd set off to find your father and brother.
Not So Cinderella...yay~

Yes, this does follow the basic plot of Cinderella, but it also has twists, so its not a complete rip-off of the original tale.
